Standards & ValuesSafety

Vela International Marine Limited strives to attain and maintain a positive safety culture where personal injury, material damage or damage to the environment is minimized, and, if at all possible, eliminated. Vela takes every action necessary to prevent incidents by complying with, or exceeding, the requirements of Flag, Class and International regulations. To achieve these standards, Vela provides a safe working environment for our employees and contractors on board our vessels. At the same time, we require that all employees, in the discharge of their duties, take reasonable care for their own safety, that of their colleagues and of their vessel. Employees are also expected to take any appropriate measures to protect the environment and prevent pollution.
Environmental Responsibility

Environmental accountability is regarded as one of the most important measures by which a company is recognized within the industry. We feel that environmental protection is not only our duty as responsible citizens of the planet, but it is essential to developing public and regulatory trust. To this end, Vela established within its organizational structure the Pollution Control & Environmental Engineering Unit which is responsible for implementing the company’s program for prevention and control of operational and accidental oil spills. This unit functions in accordance with the corporation’s Environmental, Health and Safety Policy, as well as international and national environmental laws, regulations, codes and recognized industry standards.
The unit also actively participates in the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) meetings. And through direct involvement in bodies such as the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Transport, Presidency of Meteorology and Environmental Protection, RECSO, OCIMF, INTERTANKO and ITOPF, Vela stays fully engaged in the issues affecting the shipping industry.
Security

Vela provides full and all-encompassing protection for the company’s assets and personnel. For its vessels at sea, the company has implemented the IMO’s International Ship & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, as well as other exacting security procedures. For its operations on land, internally developed security measures have been introduced. The Vela Security Operations Group is charged with the day to day application of the company’s security policies. The goal of the Vela Security Operations Group is to be a leader in the security field, and its members will stop at nothing to provide for the safety and protection of all company assets and personnel.
Quality and Fleet Reliability

Vela operates and charters safe and environmentally sound vessels that meet or exceed the standards required by international laws and relevant codes. The company’s quality management system requires the inspection and auditing of Vela owned vessels to ensure that they are consistently well maintained and operate in an efficient, safe and environmentally sound manner. The quality management system calls for the inspection, auditing and assessment of all vessels chartered for the company’s transportation requirements, ensuring our ships are safe, reliable and efficient providers of the service. It also specifies that Vela shall be audited as an organization to ensure that it is meeting the goals set out by Vela’s quality management system, international laws and relevant codes. The Vela Quality Assurance Group has been created to perform these tasks and to ensure that all stipulations of the quality management system are being met.
Training
Vela is determined to lead the industry with the highest standards of tanker operation. This can only be accomplished by using crews of the utmost quality. For this reason, Vela has scoured the planet in search of the best crew training facilities the world has to offer.
Even at that, we have had to set our own higher standards for crew competence. To support this, we have developed our own training courses to assist in achieving the higher levels of competence we require. We are also applying DNV SeaSkill to this process to ensure that our training processes earn an internationally recognized certification.
To further enhance the skill level of the crews on board our vessels, Vela supplies computer equipment and specialized maritime training software. We are also cooperating with software manufacturers to incorporate lessons learned from Vela’s vast expertise into new training modules to further benefit our crews.
Our employees are continually challenged to expand their knowledge and increase their competency. This results in employees who lead richer personal lives and who enjoy fulfilling and rewarding careers with Vela.
