Vela’s Office Safety WorkshopMarch 21, 2008
DUBAI — Safe practices from the sea lanes to traffic lanes were the focus of a recent workshop attended by employees throughout Vela International Marine Ltd.
The Safety Strategy Workshop gave employees a chance to contribute to Vela’s overall safety culture and make recommendations on how to improve it.
“Safety is our business and cost is not an issue, so don’t even think about cost,” said Saleh B. K‘aki, Vela president and CEO. “Our safety and our families’ safety come first, when that’s fulfilled, then ships, offices and materials safety will come naturally.”
Employees looked at the business, both in the office and at sea. Vessel safety requirements and procedures are second to none, in terms of quality and standards, so the major focus was on employee safety and family safety. Despite the quality of marine safety standards, emphasis was placed on “not taking it easy and taking that for granted.”
At the end of the day, eight brief presentations were followed by a question and answer session covering leadership, accountability, communications, safety staffing/organization, training, corporate assessment, traffic safety and contractor safety.
